Key points

  • MercadoLibre reported third-quarter 2026 net revenue and financial income of $10.75 billion on November 4, 2026, up 45% year over year.
  • Gross merchandise volume rose 38% to $23 billion, and Mercado Pago's total payment volume rose 53% to $109 billion.
  • Income from operations fell 6% to $676 million, a 6.3% margin, as free shipping and network expansion weighed on profit.
  • Net income rose 6% to $448 million, helped by a lower tax rate and smaller currency losses.
  • In Brazil, MercadoLibre's cost per shipment was 5% lower than a year earlier in local currency.

MercadoLibre, Latin America’s largest ecommerce and fintech company, reported a 45% jump in third-quarter 2026 revenue to $10.75 billion on November 4, 2026. Shoppers bought more, and its Mercado Pago payments arm processed $109 billion. But profit from operations fell, as the company kept spending heavily on free shipping and a bigger delivery network to win customers in Brazil and Mexico.

What did MercadoLibre report?

For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, the Montevideo, Uruguay-based company reported:

  • Net revenue and financial income: $10.75 billion, up 45% year over year and 41% on an FX-neutral basis.
  • Income from operations: $676 million, down 6%, with a 6.3% margin.
  • Net income: $448 million, up 6%, a 4.2% margin.
  • Gross merchandise volume (GMV): $23 billion, up 38% and 33% FX-neutral.
  • Total payment volume (TPV): $109 billion, up 53% and 51% FX-neutral.
  • Adjusted free cash flow: $285 million, after $503 million of capital spending and $2.1 billion invested in growing its credit portfolio.

For comparison, MercadoLibre reported revenue of $7.4 billion and operating income of $724 million in the third quarter of 2025. So revenue grew by more than $3 billion in a year, while operating profit fell.

Why did profit margins shrink?

MercadoLibre was open about the cost of its growth strategy. Its operating margin of 6.3% was 0.4 percentage points lower than in the second quarter. The company pointed to two main reasons:

  • Shipping: a net headwind of 0.6 percentage points. Free shipping on more orders and smaller average baskets meant less revenue per parcel. Higher energy prices raised transport costs. And the company grew its fulfilment space by almost 20% in a single quarter, adding hiring costs.
  • Marketing: higher sales and marketing spend, including a decision to invest more in its affiliates programme in Brazil.

Net income still rose because a lower tax rate and smaller foreign exchange losses, $72 million against $102 million a year earlier, more than offset the drop in operating income.

Is the free shipping bet working?

MercadoLibre describes free shipping as a habit-building investment. It lowered the free shipping threshold in Brazil in June 2025, extending free shipping to items from R$19, and the company says the move has brought in more new buyers who buy more often.

There are signs of efficiency too. In Brazil, cost per shipment in the third quarter of 2026 was 5% lower than a year earlier in local currency, and 14% lower than in the first quarter of 2025. The company said its cost to serve customers is falling in commerce and flat in fintech, even as users do more on the platform. It argues these savings will reach reported margins gradually as its investments mature.

How does Mercado Pago fit in?

MercadoLibre calls the link between its marketplace and Mercado Pago a “flywheel”: a better marketplace brings more users into Mercado Pago, and a better Mercado Pago makes the marketplace more appealing. Payment volume growing faster than GMV suggests Mercado Pago is being used more and more outside the marketplace. The company is also lending heavily, investing $2.1 billion in its credit book during the quarter, partly offset by $1.5 billion of fintech funding.

Why it matters

MercadoLibre is the region’s leading ecommerce and fintech company, so its results are a key read on online shopping across Latin America. The quarter shows the classic ecommerce trade-off: pay for faster, cheaper delivery now to win market share, and hope scale brings profits later. The same debate is playing out elsewhere. Coupang’s Q3 results showed the costs of running a giant fulfilment network, while Shopify is betting on AI to drive sales for its merchants.

What happens next?

Investors will watch whether the lower cost per shipment and slower network expansion start to lift margins in the fourth quarter, which includes the holiday shopping season. Credit quality at Mercado Pago will also be in focus as the loan book keeps growing.
