Key points

  • Shopify reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of $3.742 billion on November 3, 2026, up 32% from a year earlier.
  • Gross merchandise volume rose 29% to $119.1 billion, and free cash flow reached $816 million, a 22% margin.
  • Shopify said AI-driven traffic to merchant stores grew 2.6 times year over year and orders from AI searches rose 3.3 times.

Shopify reported a 32% rise in third-quarter revenue to $3.74 billion on November 3, 2026, as merchants on its platform sold $119 billion of goods and shoppers arriving through AI assistants grew quickly. The Canadian ecommerce software company also posted a jump in profit and free cash flow. Even so, its shares fell on the day as investors focused on slightly slower growth and higher spending plans for the holiday quarter.

What did Shopify report?

For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, Shopify’s key figures were:

  • Revenue: $3.742 billion, up 32% from $2.844 billion.
  • Gross merchandise volume (GMV): $119.1 billion, up 29% (30% in constant currency).
  • Gross profit: $1.781 billion, up 28%.
  • Operating income: $568 million, up 66%.
  • Net income: $462 million, up from $264 million.
  • Free cash flow: $816 million, a 22% margin, up from 18%.

GMV is the total value of goods sold by merchants using Shopify. Revenue comes from two segments. Merchant solutions, which includes payments, grew 35% to $2.906 billion. Subscription solutions, the monthly fees merchants pay, grew 20% to $836 million. Monthly recurring revenue reached $230 million, up from $193 million.

How is AI changing Shopify’s business?

Shopify used its results to highlight the rise of AI-assisted shopping, often called agentic commerce. According to slides and the earnings call reported by Investing.com, AI-driven traffic to merchant stores rose 2.6 times compared with a year earlier, and orders coming from AI searches rose 3.3 times. Shoppers referred by AI tools converted 64% better than others.

Investing.com reported that Shopify added 15 new AI and agent integrations in September and October, with assistants including ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Grok.

President Harley Finkelstein said in the results statement that Shopify is “continuing to build commerce into every surface, every agent.” On the call, he described AI agents as “the newest front door into commerce,” according to The Canadian Press. He also acknowledged that purchases made fully by agents are still small but growing.

This trend is part of a wider push among large consumer companies. Uber, for example, recently shared early and still very small figures on rides booked through AI agents, as we covered in our report on Uber’s AI agent ride bookings.

What is Shopify’s Q4 outlook?

For the fourth quarter of 2026, which includes Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Shopify expects:

  • Revenue growth at a low-thirties percentage rate.
  • Gross profit dollars growing at a high-twenties percentage rate.
  • Operating expenses at 29% to 30% of revenue.
  • Stock-based compensation of $155 million.
  • A free cash flow margin similar to the fourth quarter of 2025.

Why did Shopify shares fall?

Shopify stock dropped on November 3. The Motley Fool put the fall at nearly 9%, while Investing.com reported a 7.61% decline.

The Motley Fool pointed to several reasons. Revenue growth of 32% was slightly slower than the 34% Shopify posted in each of the previous two quarters, and GMV and gross profit growth also slowed. Planned operating costs for the fourth quarter were higher, partly because of marketing around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It added that about two-thirds of the improvement in free cash flow margin was temporary.

TD Cowen analyst John Shao told The Canadian Press that the results were largely in line, but that “elevated investor expectations heading into Q3 left no margin for error.”

Why it matters

With $119 billion of goods sold through its platform in a single quarter, Shopify’s numbers offer a broad view of independent ecommerce. The quarter shows that merchants on the platform are still growing sales quickly, and that AI assistants are becoming a real source of shoppers rather than a novelty.

For merchants, the message is that being visible to AI agents is starting to matter alongside search engines and social media.

What happens next?

The holiday shopping season is the next big test. Black Friday and Cyber Monday fall in late November, and Shopify’s fourth-quarter results in early 2027 will show whether AI-driven shopping keeps growing at its current pace.
