Key points

  • Coupang reported record third-quarter 2026 revenue of $9.962 billion on November 3, 2026, up 7% year over year and 11% in constant currency.
  • The company posted a net loss of $501 million, compared with a net profit of $95 million a year earlier.
  • A July 2026 fire at a leased fulfilment centre in Incheon cost Coupang $248 million in the quarter.
  • Excluding the fire, Coupang's net loss would have been $321 million and its operating loss $202 million.
  • Coupang guided for fourth-quarter revenue growth of 13% to 14% in constant currency.

South Korean ecommerce company Coupang posted record sales but a deep loss for the third quarter of 2026. The company said on November 3, 2026, that revenue rose 7% to $9.96 billion, while it swung to a $501 million net loss as costs from a July fire at one of its fulfilment centres weighed on results. Management said it believes the quarter marks the low point for margins in its core business.

What did Coupang report?

For the three months ended September 30, 2026, Coupang’s main figures were:

  • Revenue: $9.962 billion, up 7% from $9.267 billion, or 11% in constant currency.
  • Gross profit: $2.561 billion, down 6%.
  • Operating loss: $450 million, compared with an operating profit of $162 million a year earlier.
  • Net loss: $501 million, compared with a net profit of $95 million.
  • Diluted loss per share: $0.28.
  • Adjusted EBITDA: $116 million, a 1.2% margin, down from $413 million.

The revenue figure was a quarterly record, equal to about 14.22 trillion won, and the constant-currency growth rate beat the company’s own guidance of 8% to 9%. Gross margin fell to 25.7%, down 3.64 percentage points.

How much did the fire cost?

In July 2026, a fire broke out at a fulfilment centre that Coupang leases in Incheon. The company said the fire cost $248 million in the third quarter, made up of $95 million in cost of sales and $153 million in operating, general and administrative expenses.

Excluding the fire, Coupang said its operating loss would have been $202 million and its net loss $321 million. Its gross margin would have been 26.7%. The Korea Times put the cost of the fire at about 354 billion won.

How did each business perform?

Coupang reports two segments.

Product Commerce, its core retail business, had revenue of $8.374 billion, up 5% (8% in constant currency). Segment adjusted EBITDA fell 45% to $385 million, a 4.6% margin, from $705 million a year earlier. Active customers rose 2% to 25.2 million, and revenue per active customer rose 3% to $332.

Developing Offerings, which includes its Taiwan business and the Coupang Eats food delivery service, grew revenue 23% to $1.588 billion, or 27% in constant currency. Its adjusted EBITDA loss narrowed by $23 million to $269 million.

Is Coupang’s profitability at risk?

The third quarter was Coupang’s third straight quarterly operating loss in 2026. The Korea Times and The Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that operating losses so far this year total about 1.83 trillion won, nearly wiping out the roughly 1.9 trillion won of operating profit the company earned from 2023 to 2025.

The Korea Times also reported that Coupang could face a fine of up to 360 billion won in the fourth quarter related to Coupang Eats.

Chief executive Bom Kim struck a more hopeful note on the earnings call. “We believe Q3 represents the low point for our Product Commerce adjusted EBITDA margins,” he said, according to a transcript published by Investing.com. Chief financial officer Gaurav Anand said the company sees the pressures as temporary rather than structural.

What is Coupang’s outlook?

On the call, Coupang guided for:

  • Fourth-quarter revenue growth of 13% to 14% in constant currency.
  • An adjusted EBITDA margin 0.5 to 1.5 percentage points higher than in the third quarter.
  • Product Commerce margins returning to roughly pre-fire levels by mid-2027.

The company also raised the top end of its expected full-year loss range for Developing Offerings by $50 million to $100 million, mainly because of its Taiwan business.

Coupang bought back 12.7 million Class A shares for $201 million during the quarter.

Why it matters

Coupang’s fast delivery network is the backbone of its business, so the loss of a major fulfilment centre shows how exposed large ecommerce companies are to disruption in their logistics operations. Sales kept growing, but costs rose faster.

The results also matter for the wider delivery industry. Delivery companies elsewhere are also making big strategic bets, as seen in DoorDash’s $17 billion deal for Instacart.

What happens next?

Investors will watch whether Coupang hits its fourth-quarter growth target and whether margins in its core business start to recover as management expects. The size of any regulatory fine will also affect results in the final quarter of 2026.
